Travelling Essentials, The Transport of Firearms & Bows

We advise you to bring your own weapons and ammunition because you’re most familiar with them and will be more comfortable and confident using weapons you know. Afton House offers a highly professional airport meet and greet service and can facilitate the temporary importation of your weapons. We recommend using their services.

If you prefer to avoid bringing your own, you can rent weapons of various calibers from Ubuninzi. Please contact us well before your trip so we can discuss your needs.

If you do want to apply to import your weapons, you need:

  • an original passport and a legal (certified) photocopy
  • a plane ticket back to your country of origin
  • your gun permit showing proof of ownership
  • SAPS 520 documents with the required fields filled out in black ink. Documents must not be signed at home but in the presence of the police officer
  • a letter of invitation from Ubuninzi as your host

Note that document processing is free at any port of entry into The Republic of South Africa. Still, the process can take several hours when busy, especially if you opt to do it without the help of Afton House. Make sure you allow enough time for this process between connecting flights.

Important to remember:

  • Importing automatic or semi-automatic weapons is prohibited in South Africa.
  • Only one weapon is allowed per caliber, per person.
  • A maximum of 200 cartridges is allowed per caliber, per person.
  • The temporary import permit will not be granted to anyone under twenty-one (21) years old.
