Non-hunting partners, friends or kids are welcome at Ubuninzi. We provide many opportunities beyond the hunt for relaxation, adventure, fun and an authentic African wildlife safari. We can arrange on-site wellness treatment (massage, manicure, and pedicures) or day trips to Addo Elephant National Park, Scotia Game Ranch, or the nearby Daniell Cheetah Breeding Project. If you want to stay on the ranch, you can read, swim, play pool, boules, board games and more. Some guests like to join our chefs in the kitchen and try their hand at baking. Or you can request a walk through the veld, do some birdwatching, paint, or draw.
We used the services of professional tour guides to offer day trips to South Africa’s Addo Elephant National Park. Here, you can spot all the ‘Big 5’: lions, elephants, rhinos, buffalos, and leopards. The park is renowned for its conservation efforts, pristine habitat, and abundant game, including large elephant herds. The park was established in 1931 and is one of the biggest in South Africa. Our proximity to the extraordinary destination gives you a unique opportunity to explore its wonders in addition to your hunt.
Schotia Safaris was a pioneer game reserve in the Eastern Cape of South Africa. Next door to the renowned Addo Elephant National Park, it’s home to 40 mammal species. It offers some exceptional game safaris and viewing opportunities year-round. It’s just a short drive from Ubuninzi and a great option to experience if you’d like to add some new mammals to your life list in between your hunts with Ubuninzi.
From Ubuninzi Game Lodge, venture out to explore the Daniell Cheetah Breeding Project, established in May 2001 with just three cats and now flourishing through breeding, acquisitions, and exchanges. Their mission is to contribute to cheetah conservation while educating visitors about the significance of protecting this species. They offer a unique educational tour where you can encounter six of South Africa’s seven wild cat species alongside meerkats and spotted hyenas.
Embarking on an e-bike adventure on our dirt roads and tracks is a great way to experience Ubuninzi’s wildlife and dramatic landscape. The virtually silent bikes mean minimal disturbance to animals you may encounter and let you cover more ground with less physical exertion. This experience is subject to the availability of a guide.
We can bring in therapists to offer a range of massages, manicures, and pedicures, which will take place in your room. The therapists are off-site, so these experiences must be booked in advance.
Birdlife on the ranch is abundant, especially in the summer when all the migrants are back. The property’s dams and water points attract water birds, and there is usually a good mix of karoo bushveld, grassland, and fynbos birds around. Three of our more interesting species for birders are Ludwig’s bustard, southern black korhaan and martial eagle – South Africa’s largest eagle.
Tracking is an art and a science we practice on every hunt when we find and trail wildlife. But it is also a way for non-hunters to connect to nature, with no end goal in sight, just the next track or sign. This experience is subject to the availability of a tracker.
South Africa’s Eastern Cape was initially inhabited by the indigenous Khoi-San people, who left a cultural imprint through their rock art scattered across the landscape. The arrival of European settlers in the 19th century brought about a transformation in land use and agriculture. During the Boer War, many military engagements took place in the area. Carene is the on-site history buff, so if you want to learn more about the area, chat with her.
